Technology Infused Lesson

Technology Infused Lesson:

TEKS: 1.6 C describe the change in location of an object such as closer to, nearer to, and farther from.

1.6 D demonstrate and record the ways that objects can move such as in a straight line, zig, zag, up and down, back and forth, round and round, and fast and slow.

Task Objective:  Students will describe the change in location of an object and demonstrate they ways objects can move.

Rubric:

  • 20 points student can retell the process of building using key vocabulary
  • 20 points student can describe the change in location of the object
  • 20 points student can create and modified plans along the way
  • 20 points student can include one sentence in video describing the roller coaster.
  • 20 points collaboration

Lesson Description:

Students studied the ways things move for 2 weeks prior.

Students began this activity by identifying vocabulary.  Each group chose one object and used words to describe the ways it can move and then recorded it in their interactive Science Journal.  Then, we did a gallery walk with one another and compared the similarities and differences in the ball, car, or marble.

Next, groups chose a car, marble, or ping pong ball to create a roller coaster for the rest of the week. They began with a plan utilizing the questions below:

What materials do you need? How can you make it go fast or faster? Slow? Zigzag? Ect? Will you make it go farther from or nearer to the starting point?

After they completed their roller coaster, they recorded the ways they made an object move using our new vocabulary and the Show Me app.

Reflection:

This lesson was a great success! Many students were using and continue to use more descriptive words for the ways things move.  Even though many of my students have had experiences with real life roller coasters, this activity encouraged them to think about what their design needed to look like to match the movements.  Most of the groups had to make modifications along the way, but used good terminology, teamwork, and technology very well!  The thing I would change about this lesson would be for my students to have more time create their masterpieces.
